Mid-Wheel Drive Power Wheelchairs
The different types of power chairs available offer a choice of front-wheel, mid-wheel and rear-wheel drive, and Quantum works closely with customers and their therapists to ensure that they choose the correct one for their needs.
What is a Mid-Wheel Drive Power Chair?
When selecting a mid-wheel drive power wheelchair, this means that the drive wheel is located at the centre of gravity of the chair as a whole. The chair has six wheels in total, with two drive wheels in the centre, and 2 castor wheels in the front and back. What this means is that the power chair can turn on the tightest radius.
This makes mid-wheel drive power chairs perfect for use in indoor environments, whether at work or at home. The user can navigate around crowded and busy environments, as well as pass through entrances and tiny spaces.
Ideal for the Urban Environment
Mid-wheel drive power wheelchairs are also ideal for built-up urban environments, where the ground is relatively smooth, but has a number of challenges such as kerbs, bumps in the road, and inclines.
Due to the power of the chair being located in the central base of the wheelchair, it can offer the user great stability. This stability is not compromised in any way even if the roadway has steep slopes and inclines, which might otherwise cause less versatile and robust chairs to topple.
