Bariatric Power Wheelchairs
Power wheelchairs are specially designed and highly engineered for their purpose of providing safe, supportive mobility to people who would otherwise struggle. Every aspect of the design is determined by the person the chair is carrying.
This means that chairs have to be designed for a particular weight range, and heavier weights – especially those exceeding the stated weight limit of the design – can have adverse effects on power wheelchairs. Most seriously of all, if the user is heavier than the power wheelchair was designed for, then the weight distribution will not be as intended, leading to a less stable chair and a risk of dangerous tipping.
A chair’s tyres and suspension will also be designed around a particular weight range, and if the user is heavier than this, then the ride comfort and the chair’s ability to cope with ledges, kerbs, and other uneven ground will be reduced, and so will the performance of the batteries and the motors. Seats, armrests and footrests may not be sized or positioned comfortably for physically larger bodies.
For these reasons, Quantum has a range of heavy-duty bariatric power wheelchairs intended for greater-than-average weights and sizes. These power chairs cater for users of weights between 28 stone and 42 stone (181-272kg).
4Front 2 HD
A variant on our popular 4Front 2, the 4Front2 HD, adds heavy-duty design upgrades to the standard model, resulting in a long list of features rarely seen on a bariatric power wheelchair for users weighing up to 32st (204kg). This includes the seat with powered positioning for tilt, recline, and legs as well as 10 inches (25cm) of powered seat lift, which can be adjusted while the chair is moving at up to 3.5mph.
Other features include Smart Traction Control (STC) and our Smooth Ride Suspension (SRS), which uses automotive-style springs and dampers for a comfortable, stable journey on rough ground. This second-generation of the 4Front design includes four-pole motors and redesigned rear caster arms and comes with 14-inch pneumatic tyres and front and rear LED fender lights. It’s also available in 14 colour options, and available accessories include a reversing camera, a hydration system, a tablet holder, and a backpack holder.
Q6 Edge HD
Another heavy-duty variant of one of our existing products, the Q6 Edge HD, is ideal for users requiring a manoeuvrable and adaptable bariatric power wheelchair. Depending on the chosen seat type, it can accommodate users weighing up to either 32.2 st (204 kg) or 35.7 st (227 kg). The Mid-Wheel Drive design and Active-Trac Suspension give the Q6 Edge HD a turning radius of just 19.75 inches (502mm) and a stable ride. The 14-inch wheels with optional solid, pneumatic, or knobbly tyres give this power chair good traction.
Another important feature of this bariatric power wheelchair is its ability to be customised with either Synergy or TB3 seating options. The TB3 seating system includes 10-inch powered seat lift that can travel at 3.5 mph while lifted, as well as tilt and recline functions. The Synergy seating features powered seat tilt. There is also the choice of three electronic control systems depending on your use case and needs. Along with ten colour options, the Q6 Edge HD comes standard with a USB charger port.
Q1450
This bariatric power wheelchair is specifically intended for users weighing up to 42.8 stone (272kg), with a seat width of up to 32 inches (81cm) and a seat depth of up to 28 inches (71cm). The Q1450 is a front-drive power chair with rear castor wheels, so it delivers exceptional outdoor performance and stability while also being highly manoeuvrable in tight spaces. Two 70Ah batteries and 4-pole motors deliver efficient range and a top speed of 4mph. The swing arm rear suspension acts like that on a motorbike, cushioning lumps and bumps and giving a smooth and pain-free ride.
The standard seat on the Q1450 is a pinchless High Hinge, High Back ‘Captain style’ seat, with head support and a contoured seat cushion. Versions of this seat with lumbar cut-outs are available, and the largest dimensions are available with the optional Synergy Seating.
These chairs are the best range of bariatric power wheelchairs available in the UK, with essential elements of comfort, versatility, durability, and ease of use. This ensures that all our customers can continue to enjoy independence and freedom of movement.
